Danny's powers are established in the movie. When he was talking to the caretaker the caretaker talked about how him and his grandma talked telepathically and he could do so with Danny. He called it the Shining.

To answer a question from the group in the video - 2010 was a both a book and movie sequel to 2001: Space Odyssey. While stylistically different from Kubrick's film, Peter Hyams (the director) did a great job of filling in some plot holes and continuing the story in a cool way. Some people didn't like it because it didn't hold up to Kubrick's film but honestly, who can do a Kubrick film better than Kubrick? I expect Dr. Sleep will feel the same way. It will be neat to see the world Danny Torrance and The overlook hotel again but it wont be quite as chilling as Kubrick's film.

Frankly it’s weird that King-who has little love for Kubrick’s adaptation-would let _Doctor Sleep,_ a sequel to his novel, be adapted as a sequel to _Kubrick’s_ movie.

😊 The character you described as "the caretaker" and "old black man" was actually "Dick Hallorann" who was originally played by Scatman Crothers in THE SHINING (1980). Mr. Crothers has been dead since 1986. The Hallorann character died in the movie... but *not* in the book. So, Hallorann *was* in the DOCTOR SLEEP novel as a living character. But since this seems to be more of a sequel to the original movie (as the creepy twins weren't in the original novel nor sequel novel) then Carl Lumbly (who *is* playing Dick Hallorann, according to IMDb) is either a ghost of Hallorann... or Hallorann's death has been modified in the "retroactive continuity" sense.

@IRaYnEmAn Did it occur to you that I am RESPONDING? Do you actually think or do you just respond with fight or flight and knee jerk type KZclip sophomoric gibberish? That "comment" of yours, I mean how many times has that EXACT wording been used?
Moving on...did you read Doctor Sleep? Do you read at all? Just trolling, dreary deary?
Whenever I see the "F" word employed just for the sake of using it, I know I am dealing with a dull normal.
"You're clearly obsessed with material..." Wow. This is a total non-sequitur. Did you have any idea what you meant by it? Or, like "fuck" and "weirdo", did it just sound cool to you?
Actually, I AM kind of obsessed with YOU. It is rare to encounter someone as patently devoid of brain function who is alive. Typically, subjects like you forget to breathe and expire. Good for you!

@Jin Trash Jin...I expect them to be familiar with a piece of media they are talking about in at least a rudimentary way. They didn't even know who the black man was in the trailer who was Dick Halloran and looked almost identical to the late Scatman Crothers. People who discuss, review, critique (because this was a LONG ass discussion for a damn trailer, no?) movies and such make it a point to be familiar with the subject, at least in general. Yeah, I expect them to read the book---if that is unrealistic, Jim, than I am happy to be guilty as charged. I have no gripe with you, though. Thanks for the comment.

@Aidan de Meyer You're right, Aidan...these guys are totally ignorant of the source material (the original novel) and did not even put together that the black man in the trailer is Danny being visited by the departed Dick Halloran (played by the late Scatman Crothers). Really shoddy display. Lazy.

7:35 I guess *Aaron* doesn't remember the talk with _Scatman Crothers_ had with Danny about his power. If he had remembered, it would fill in that gap.
6:13 *Rick* is thinking of *2010: **_The Year We Make Contact,_* which I actually prefer over *2001 - A Space Odyssey.* But they are both completely different animals.

The hotel fed off of Danny's Shining powers. Before the hotel could only do small things, make ghosts appear here and there, even when Hallorann, who also had the Shining, was there his abilities weren't enough for the hotel to feed off of to make it do half the things it could when Danny showed up.

It doesn't focus on it so much since Jack's character steals the show, but in the movie I'm pretty sure the caretaker uses his powers with Danny and tells Danny that he calls it the shining.

I don't know anything about Doctor Sleep, but at this point I would guess the bald guy in the trailer is meant to represent the caretaker's ghost or something.

5:10 - In the 1980 film head chef Dick Hallorann (Scatman Crothers) was killed with an axe by Jack in the final act.
In the book Hallorann lived, being only knocked out with a croquet mallet, and stayed friends with Wendy and Danny for years after Jack's death.

I liked the trailer until people's eyes started glowing and they had superpowers. This doesn't FEEL like the shining.. This just looks silly.
The Shining had that type of realistic horror with people going slowly mad all alone in a giant hotel. With a few ghosts here and there. But what I saw in the trailer looked like a DC show.

    • Andy Smith
Andy Smith 2 ай бұрын +2

@SuperNerdGavin but the movie didn't even get that part wrong. Danny both has and uses those powers in the original movie. The caretaker tells him he has "the shining". It's not new, or something that was just in the book. People complaining it's not like the first movie which they obviously don't even remember.

    • Andy Smith
      Andy Smith 2 ай бұрын

It looks nothing like a DC show. Danny telepathically communicates with with an old dude in another damn country in the original movie, you all seem to have amnesia or something. The Shining is literally a reference to Danny's power, and it's the name of the damn movie.

@DaBaba85 This is about a question that Eric asked about a movie sequel, made to cash in on the success of Kubrik's movie, like Exorcist II: The Heretic was made, even though it had nothing to do with the author who wrote The Exorcist. In fact there was a terrible sequel to Salem's Lot which had nothing to do with Stephen King and another one was a sequel to Carrie.
