If you go by this video Doctor Sleep the movie is based off of Doctor Sleep the novel written by Stephen King, who apparently has instead of writing a sequel has mass produced a stunning piece of fanfiction based off of the mini series based on his novel. *facedesk*

I'm a huge fan of Kubrick's The Shining, and Stephen King's famous difficulty with it seems inexplicable to me. Sure, some of the acting was hammy, but Kubrick's chilling vision and obsessive attention to detail gave his film a grandeur that makes his 1980 masterpiece remain eminently watchable decades later. This film resorts to mindless gore: the female villain's shoving of her thumb into the hero's femoral artery seemed gratuitous and the ritualistic murder of a very unfortunate young baseball player, unacceptable (or as the New Yorker's Anthony Lane put it in his review, "dramatically inexcusable"). This film's re-creation of scenes from the original included child and adult actors, rugs, a Big Wheel bike, and entire sections of the Overlook Hotel that all were conspicuously inferior imitations of the greater original film. I was particularly incensed that this film with its budget of $40-$50 million went to the trouble of duplicating the enigmatic Gold ballroom of the original hotel but then conspicuously skimped on the number of tables. Kubrick's film succeeded because it used surprisingly little direct violence in a scrupulously rendered great Western hotel. This film, led astray by its perhaps misguided fealty to Stephen King, splatters blood and special effects over a trailer park.

I actually liked the miniseries version of the shining better because of its similarity to the book. Never cared for Kubrick's version and the changes he made.

It's sad that they're continuing from the mini-series and not the original movie.
I understand the book and movies are both different experiences that don't have to be the same.
To put it shortly, even though the mini-series was more faithful to the source material, it fucking sucked. And that was the one King made...
Having people rely on the less effective mini-series for the new movie kinda defeats the purpose of having the original movie, which is a shame.
And instead of watching the mini-series, people are just going to read the books. Which defeats the purpose of the new movie.

I saw a sneak preview this movie and it was very good. A sequel to the book and Kubrick's movie, it works. It's been a while since I read Doctor Sleep but it seems to be pretty faithful to the book. R rated and pretty damn scary. Usually when King likes a movie adaptation of his book it's a good thing.

I don't wanna get hopes TOO high, since King loves the script (He also liked the Dark Tower, that movie was a disappointment) and Kubrick's Shining is, what I consider, the perfect horror movie. Let's see how this goes

So I think will probably be a good movie but I feel it will most likely be a let down in comparison to THE SHINNING. I don't care what Steven King thinks about Kubrick's version of THE SHINNING because it's a masterpiece in horror film creation.

As one constant reader to another, what do you think of 'The Regulators' and 'Desperation' ? I think both books are very underrated, they're at least in my top 10 (can't choose a favourite). I love the way both books are kind of similar but not. And I'm sure the evil entity in both is IT. I'd love to see these as films, but it would have to be done right. My ultimate wish though is for a Dark Tower film franchise, done properly. Thankee sai. Long days and pleasant nights to you 😊

In The Shining, there is no one quite as creepy than the Overlook's caretaker, Delbert Grady, or Lloyd the Bartender!
Hope that they're both in the sequel!
And when the Dr. Sleep movie is released, not having a Jack Nicholson cameo would be extremely disappointing!

If anything, his endorsement concerns me.

The horror in the book, Shining showed Jack knowing he was killing his family but was unable to stop himself. Hard for even Kubrick to show - so he just had Nicholson do his patented batshit act.

Stanley Kubrick’s version of The Shining was too awesome to get a sequel; especially with today’s lame movie industry. I read Doctor Sleep when it first came out. Didn’t care for it. The movie version of that book already looks disappointing & corny. They could’ve at least hired Shelley Duvall to play Danny’s mother in Doctor Sleep. I would’ve gone to the theater just to see her again as Mrs.Torrance. I’ll wait for this one to come out on Netflix. Doesn’t seem worth a trip to the theater.
