Why Helsinki's Library Robots Aren't Important

  • Жарияланды 2019 ж. 14 Қаз.
  • Oodi, the new Helsinki Library, has robots to help reshelve books. They get a lot of press attention. But they're not the important part of the library: here's why.

I used to work as something like a librarian at my school
    It was so fun
I just had to help with people checking in books or out, clean the library, sort the books.

Fire all librarians! Buy more robots! What are librarians but failed teachers and what are failed teachers but those who literally failed at everything else?

And then in Croatia, there's books on quackery and pseudoscience in the science section. So much about "truth". :(

Sounds great and all, but the activities described mean that this building isn't so much a library but a community center or learning annex.
In other words, why build a library at all when you could just build a community center or learning annex? What's the benefit of having a library perform non-library functions? Librarians are organizers of libraries, not class instructors or 3-D printer operators, so aren't they largely superfluous at the Oodi? (Obviously you can't see me, but I'm asking not to be argumentative but because I'm genuinely curious).

I wish there was more of a thing in Australia. Perhaps one 'big' community type library like this rather than a bunch of poorly staffed, uninspired, aesthetically unappealing libraries.
Probably less in the long term for the government and might help make libraries relevant again.

In terms of access to books 4 the rich etc., unfortunately in Britain you need an address to get a library card, and money to use the internet, so.. homeless people do not have the privellege of public libraries

Wow, this is amazing! A free, fun place to go to aquire knowledge and skills, use equipment that one might have difficulty obtaining on their own, and play video games! It's almost like the ideas behind socialism *aren't* the literal incarnation of Satan, who'da thunk!

Why are we wasting a robot's time performing tasks a person can do? If I were a librarian, I would want people to handle my books. Otherwise, we'll just have robots write the books for us as well.
