@Powderwombat Frankly, I don't give a crap about awards because I've seen way too many bad movies receive them. As to why we're talking about this scene, well it's the subject of the video, that's why.

@Adam Baldwin It's one scene out of an entire movie... why is everyone so obsessed with this scene? Why not break down some of the good editing like the Live Aid scene. It's like people who never watched the whole movie think the whole thing has terrible editing based on this one scene that everyone keeps obsessing about. It won best editing which is voted on by professional film editors.

While I do think Ottman was being genuine in his response and his account of how "the scene" came to be, watching this again just reinforces how bad the editing is, and while it does appear to be shot fairly poorly, you nicely demonstrated how the scene can be improved using the existing footage. Ironically, Ottman claims the need to cut it down as one of the reasons for the terrible editing, and yet in order to make the scene better, you cut it down even further. I'm going to chop this up to tunnel vision on his part, as he was probably staring at this footage for hundreds by the time he was done with this scene.

The cinematography is quite bizarre and rather bad, though. The extremely wide shot thrown in the middle, why did they even film that? It's as if you're filming a several minute-long scene that either starts or ends with a wide shot, but the characters in the shot are all doing things mid-scene.

I would love to give Ottman the benefit of the doubt, and I do give him credit for taking responsibility for his editing, but there's no way around it, this scene was a major blunder. And while circumstances and studio pressure no doubt made things difficult, isn't that why you get paid to do the job? I think other editors encounter similar situations all the time, and the truly great ones rise above those problems and get the job done. I really don't mean to be judging Ottman, but I think he could have and should have done a better job.

While the editing may have been a mess, the movie itself was like watching a sped up A&E Biography on Queen. It lightly touched on many, many subjects, but never completely told the story. The actors were great but the writing/script/direction was off. This was an R rated story made into a PG film

There are no set rules for a good edit. Rules are a trap and it restricts you. The only thing that matters is sticking to the story and the characters in it.
You cannot question an editors decision unless and until you were in that room.

This youtuber has no clue what he is talking about but presents with a convincing, authoritative tone. He is mostly criticizing stylistic/artistic choices against his own dogmatic standards. There is a reason why Bohemian Rhapsody won the American Cinema Editor's award (voted on my film editors)...some of the scenes in the movie (production of Bohemian Rhapsody, Live Aid Concert) are actually masterclasses in film editing.

A little knowledge can be dangerous. Your recut does not work very well at all because it fails to deliver what the original did - the original makes the audience increasingly uncomfortable, especially contrasted with the long tracking shot that opens the scene. An audience not familiar with editing will share the feeling of the band, feeling uncomfortable and off-balance, in fact you get this effect if you watch the scene without sound. Knowing something about editing causes you to think it is 'wrong' because it does not conform to basic guidelines. Whether it deserved an Oscar is hard to tell but there is a clear purpose to the editing of this scene.

Seems to me this scene suffers from a lot of problems. Uninteresting cinematography and uninspired screenplay are just as significant to me as the editing. And those three things are probably interconnected. If a scene doesn't have a clear sense of purpose and tone, I imagine it's hard to edit it.

Sorry, but i have to disagree with your recut. I think the original is better.
I have not seen the movie, all of what i have seen is what you show here. Yet I feel that the nervousness that shows through the second shot of Brian before the two other men are shown is very well expressed in the shot. Everybody needs to look their best, and he checks on them if they are looking good, which we see even before they are shown.
I agree with most of the other things you say. The editing is surely flashy, possibly overly so.
The shot of three members without Brian could be rooted in the story, though. On one hand, the scene seems to be filmed somewhat from his angle (commenting on mercurys choice of dress, looking if the other guys look good), on the other hand: I would, not knowing anything about the history of queen, surmise that this character gets thrown out of the band in the movie.
These three guys are queen, the take seems to say.

You are talking about one 90 second scene out of an entire movie. Why not break down some of the good editing like the Live Aid scene or the bathroom sink transition into tv van satellite. It's like people who never watched the whole movie think the whole thing has terrible editing based on this one scene that everyone keeps obsessing about.

You're bitching about a 90 second long scene in a movie that's over 2 hours long bro, and claiming "Bohemian Rhapsody has bad editing", meanwhile you describe good editing techniques over footage of Bohemian Rhapsody doing exactly those techniques. What the fuck are you talking about? See the problem isn't really in this analysis, but it's in the presentation such as your stupid video title which is misleading, and idiots who haven't seen the movie or are complete sheep will somehow translate this into thinking the entire movie is this poorly edited. It's not. It won best editing which is voted on by professional film editors who know more about film editing than you do. John Ottman is an oscar winning Hollywood editor and you're a fucking KZclipr.

I think another issue with the editing of this film is that with the amount of cuts they have, along with the said spatial continuity, it ends up overwhelming the viewers' eyes, and therefore, making them feel tired, dissoriented, and needlessly confused, due to the amount of unnecessary information that's being presented all at once.

This is direct, candid criticism from a KZclipR (sarcasm) of a professional who is clearly accomplished. But that doesn't make you wrong. Your changes are an improvement, maybe even objectively. I wish he had acknowledged that. Also, his ad hominem about your voice and speaking style was definitely NOT professsional.

okay, the movie was supposed to be about an important man’s life time, he is a legend, and they have to get the movie in less than a couple hours. They are going to have to cut out a lot of things, they have to get the basics. You people can not be mad about everything that is left out because the band had done a lot during this time. You people need to be grateful that John, Roger, and Brian agreed to do this film.
There were A LOT of excellent editing in this movie and you are telling a group of people that this movie has terrible editing, what a shame. And you must not have anything to do in your life if you are going to nitpick their editing mistakes. Did you actually see the Live Aid scene? Did you see the camera angle? Did you see the camera angles and movement throughout the movie? And since you had all the time to nitpick these mistakes J hope you realize that their editing skills mixed the actors voice and the group of the actual band’s voice together. Just wow, ungrateful.

What makes you an authority of what people don't get bothered by and not? You're also contradicting yourself by claiming that everything is up each and everyone like there are no standards or authorities for anything, but then come off as an authority yourself by claiming that the editing doesn't bother anyone. There's also something called "being critical to sources", and if the option is to listen to someone who has done some basic research (yes, BASIC research) on film editing or a random anarchist troll, then my decision is pretty obvious.
"Pedantic and overly know it all tone". That's just some lazy excuse and defense mechanism people use just because they don't understand something or feel alienated, almost as if everything in this world has to be written for high school students

    • Carter Creative

@Morten Aanstad I watched the movie as your average movie goer and the editing did not bother me in the slightest. I very much doubt it bothered 99% of people who've seen the film either. If you're going to challenge the conventions, then your suggestion should at least be something that's still aesthetically pleasing. For example, you could be creative and original by making a Star Wars movie consisting solely of Jar Bar Binks literally pissing over Han Solo's grave, but I don't think most people would enjoy that

Apart from this scene I really liked the first 70s tour montage especially the shot that goes through the bus and transitions into a concert scene. It wasn't that bad. This scene was bad because although in the contract there should have been the same screen time for all members of the band you could see that the director had told the camera operators to focus mainly on Freddie and Brian. That's why in a lot of scenes Roger and Deaky were together so they could make up for the screen time for those 2 characters.

Ottman won the American Cinema Editor (ACE) Award for 2019, so we are not talking about Oscar voters who might not know the first thing about editing. The ACE is an honourary society of film editors. These people know editing more than novices who’re still in editing school and posting their inexpert opinions on social media. Maybe ACE judged it based on the challenges they knew Ottman had to hurdle, and said “frig it, that guy deserves an award.”
Or they could have voted for Ottman purely on the Live Aid sequence, which elevated an otherwise tepid biopic. That was an excellently shot rendition of Queen’s finest performance.
Ottman‘s been around a long time and I think his edits in such movies as the X-men series are excellent. He just made the best of a bad situation with Bohemian Rhapsody. The result speaks for itself - almost a billion dollars at the box office.
Ottman said he was under a lot of pressure. Singer left, and Fletcher came and added a few scenes and Ottman had to stitch them in seamlessly. He added that the producers were breathing down his neck, something about giving each character equal screen time. (Would we be surprised if May and Taylor stipulated this?) Ottman said that if he could revisit this scene he would.
I would challenge all those so called experts to make a hash of a stressful situation where the director’s been fired, a new one adds scenes which has a slightly different tone to the previous, and producers are jumping on your neck.
The fact of the matter is, we don’t see where Fletcher took over from where Singer left. It could be that Fletcher managed to stay within the overall tone of the movie. OR, the editor managed to stitch these disparate scenes together such that no one noticed.
Nope, no rookie editor can do that. So this knotty Queen-Reed scene is easily forgiven.
I’m probably the only one who enjoyed this scene. The fast pace tells me how tense Queen feels that they might be rejected by Reed.
Reed’s change in position amused me because it tells me he’s equally excited to meet Queen.
